Torii are a type of gate found in Shinto shrines all over Japan. The main function of the torii is to mark the entrance of a sacred place. The first torii was built after a few boats landed on a beach and a deity appeared.
The deity was the God of the Sea so the people built a gate to welcome him and other deities. The gates became more and more elaborate over time.
The torii are usually made from wood or stone and can be very ornate.
The torii is a very common sight in Japan, in fact, there are thousands of them.
